Suzanne Shearer
PhatSheep Textiles

Suzanne is a printed textile designer. Working from her studio at her home in rural Shetland she designs the characteristic bold graphic prints her business PhatSheep is now famous for. These designs are printed onto cottons and linens and sewn into an ever increasing range of accessories both for the individual and for the home.
There is a strong link to Suzanne’s Shetland heritage and surrounding environment throughout her designs, croft houses, Fair Isle jumpers and seabirds all feature in her unique textiles. Her aim is to make fun prints into functional products and hopefully to make people smile a little when using them.

I work from my studio space at home, designing and making colourful knitted accessories and interior pieces. A love of pattern and colour combined with the soft tactile qualities of wool is the basis of most of my work. Traditional Shetland knitting which has absorbed influences from centuries of trade links with Europe and Scandinavia is a constant source of inspiration. Old notebooks of patterns collected by family members, and garments that have survived over generations but are still vibrant and innovative, are a great reference which often filter through my designs to come out in quirky new guises.
I’m interested in things with a narrative quality and odd objects that can become ‘treasures’. I also work in felt, hand spinning and free machine embroidery and enjoy having a chance to do more experimental projects and one-off pieces.
